Christmas Concerts 2009

Our Christmas concerts took place in December at St. Winefride’s Catholic Church and Parkgate URC.

The concerts raised over £300 for charity shared between Neston High School music development fund and Claire House Hospice.

Part of the programme featured the UK premieré of Suffolk-based composer, Graeme Hopson‘s carol, Snowflakes. Read more about the carol on our conductor’s blog.

Festive music at Gordale

The singers performed two 50 minute sets of our favourite Christmas Carols at Gordale Garden Centre last Thursday evening, entertaining Santa and various other entertainers along with hundreds of visitors to the centre on their annual Christmas Open Evening. Needless to say, between the sets, the centre café’s ‘Coffee and a mince pie for £1.50′ was well received!

Hymns of Praise, Shotwick

We lead a celebration of the new sound system and hymn books at St. Michael’s Church, Shotwick on Friday 2nd October, 2009 which featured favourite hymns of the congregation along with a couple of well known anthems.

Simon Walker, organ scholar at Chester Cathedral accompanied the choir on the organ in Fauré’s Cantique de Jean Racine. We also performed Brucker’s delightful little motet, Locus Iste.

The podcast contains just under 13 minutes of edited ‘highlights’ from the service.

Rutter’s Mass for the Children with CMS Youth Choir

Saturday, 25th April saw the first Neston performance of John Rutter’s enchanting ‘Mass for the Children’ at Neston Parish Church.

The performance featured the Chester Music Society Youth Choir as the children’s choir as well as local soprano, Becky Hay and baritone, James Goddard. Following the mass was Vivaldi’s famous ‘Gloria’, with solos from soprano, Becky Hay and contralto, Helena Thomas who also conducts the children’s choir participating in the event.

Accompaniment was provided on the organ by International Concert Organist, Graham Eccles. This concert was part of a local patriotic event in Neston remembering St. George which included a concert at Neston High School earlier on in the day and another concert the previous evening at the Parish Church.

Ecumenical Singers Annual Dinner

The annual dinner took place on Saturday at the Country Mouse, Brimstage. Before the meal our brains were teased with a musical quiz, (at which the musical director scored the lowest mark, though he did get the one about two minims in a semibreve!) After dinner, there was plenty of exercise to work of those calories with the Penguin Song.
